DAVAO ORIENTAL— The municipality of Governor Generoso is set to get its spacious and state-of-the-art municipal gymnasium following the groundbreaking ceremony held on February 8.

Set to rise on a one-hectare land at the boundary of Barangay Tibanban and Poblacion, the P60 million project, initiated by the Provincial Government, has 3,500 carrying capacity with floor area of 2,700 square meters and a dimension of 60 meters by 45 meters.

According to Provincial Engineer’s Office (PEO) OIC, Engineer Ruel Dumadag, the building was designed similar to the municipal gymnasium that is currently being constructed in Lupon town. He said that the structure will include bleachers with an exclusive area for cheering squads, a media box, office spaces, storage spaces, rubberized painting, parking area and landscaping.

As the funding under the National Expenditure Program has been downloaded to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Second District Engineering Office will implement the project.

Municipal Mayor Katrina Joy Orencia expressed her thanks to Governor Nelson Dayanghirang and Second District Representative Joel Mayo Almario who led the ceremony.

“Our existing gymnasium which is located at Barangay Poblacion cannot cater the ballooning population of Governor Generoso. So, we thank you Gov. Dayanghirang for granting us this project, and Congressman Almario for your support because the Municipal Government cannot fund a huge project such as this. This building is really big, we can even put up commercial spaces in it,” she said.

“We have prioritized the Municipality of Lupon and Governor Generoso because aside the from the City of Mati, Governor Generoso has the second largest population, next to Lupon. In addition, they don’t have an adequate gymnasium,” Gov. Dayanghirang has said.

Representative Almario, on the other hand, challenged the Sangguniang Barangay members to immediately pass an ordinance that will benefit the residents in hosting big future events. He said that the municipality should also be ready in terms of hotel accommodations, alongside transportation and other businesses. By Riza M. Golez/Photos by Rhea Shane Laureano
