The New Year has just unfolded and with it is its own set of challenges. This include the economic crisis due to the recent pandemic and this year’s massive budget cuts.

Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon, during her first New Year’s Address to Capitol employees in a recent Monday Convocation, urged everyone to tighten their belts and try their best to save their money amidst the grim forecasts of economic experts about the global economy resulting from the pandemic.

“Times are really hard and we are facing uncertain times,” said the Governor, as she urged Capitol employees to take the necessary austerity measures with the looming crisis, including changing gratuitous lifestyles like going into debt even when it is inessential. She also underscored the importance of being wise in handling finances. She even suggested to employees to grow their own food in small backyard gardens to help cut food costs.

This year, Local Government Units in the country are also set to experience substantial budget cuts from the national income. Davao Oriental particularly will suffer a blowing P400+ million budget reduction in its share of revenues from the national government.

Governor Malanyaon also told the Capitol employees to be grateful for the simple fact that they have a job to support their families because many others are unfortunately unemployed. She reminded them not to flaunt their wealth while others struggled and told them to count their blessings instead of complaining. “We have to change our culture,” she underscored during the Monday Capitol convocation, which was also the venue for the province’s weekly Moral Recovery Program.

More importantly, she comforted and heartened the provincial employees to remain optimistic and urged everyone to come and pray to the Almighty that “we will be able to surmount these unprecedented challenging times.”

For the provincial government’s part, Governor Malanyaon said that she and her team would do everything they could to attract investments, citing the Vietnamese and Chinese investors who recently expressed interest in infusing investment in the province, particularly aquaculture and renewable energy.

Governor Malanyaon emphasized that this year’s focus will be on programs supporting agriculture and tourism, which are the province’s main economic drivers.

Since last year, as she assumed the leadership of the province, Governor Malanyaon has laid down her plans and has started programs and projects aimed at helping the province’s economic recovery. ʙʏ ᴋᴀʀᴇɴ ʟᴏᴜ ᴅᴇʟᴏꜱᴏ | ᴘʜᴏᴛᴏ ʙʏ ᴍᴀʀᴋ ᴏʟɪᴠᴇʀ ᴀʟᴠɪᴛᴇ
