Families Affected by Cholera Get Assistance from Prov’l Gov’t, Sen. Bong Go

CARAGA, DAVAO ORIENTAL – More than 900 households who were affected by the recent cholera outbreak in the municipality of Caraga have received various assistance from the government.

On Monday, February 14, the Office of Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go distributed cash assistance to the affected families during a simple turn-over ceremony in Barangay Santiago, Caraga.

An initial 400 affected families received P5,000 each from the Office of the Senator through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, while P10,000 was given to each family who lost a family member from the outbreak. To cater to all those who were affected, Senator Go’s office also committed to provide cash assistance to the remaining affected families.

Aside from extending cash assistance, the Senator also gave food packs, water in jerrycans, face masks, and vitamins to the residents. Raffle prizes such as bicycles, computer tablets, and shoes were also given away during the distribution.

The Office of Senator Go, represented by Atty. Vannessa Goc-ong, expressed its sympathies and support to the affected residents.

Meanwhile, Governor Nelson Dayanghirang also personally handed over food packs containing 5 kilos of rice, 6 pieces of noodles, 10 sachets powdered milk, 10 packs 3-in-1 coffee, and 6 assorted canned goods from the provincial government.

Governor Dayanghirang expressed his sadness over the incident and emphasized the importance of clean water supply. He announced the provincial government’s commitment to allot P20 million funding for the construction of a Potable Water System in the barangay.

The residents of Barangay Santiago expressed their gratitude for the downpour of assistance, saying they feel comforted during this time of crisis.

As of February 15, the Provincial Health Office has reported a total 590 cases of cholera with 7 deaths. Meanwhile, there are remaining 8 patients who are still admitted, of which 7 are at the Caraga Municipal Evacuation Center and 1 is admitted at the Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital – Manay.

On the same day, the provincial government also distributed cash assistance to the residents in the Municipality of Baganga whose homes were destroyed by a recent fire incident. By Mark Oliver Alvite
