After three years of hiatus due to the pandemic, the most-anticipated sports event in Region XI is finally back!

Amidst heavy rain which battered the onset of the opening ceremonies of this year’s edition of the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet, nearly 8,000 student-athletes, coaches, and teachers marched forward and strong to grace the eager spectators at Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex, Tagum City, the afternoon of April 23, 2023.

Davao Oriental Sunrisers, together with the delegates from other 10 school divisions in Region XI paraded their colors with pride, showing their eagerness to participate in the games and communicate the essence of camaraderie and friendship through sports.

Donned in their winning red and yellow-orange uniform, the almost 400 student-athletes from Davao Oriental’s 10 municipalities together with their coaches, trainers, and support staff, performed a hand animation of the province’s hymn, Banwa na Madayaw by Dioscoro Vicentino, as a welcome salute or saludo to the guests and audiences present at the venue and online.

Davao Oriental Sunrisers athletes will compete in various sporting events against the delegates from Mati City Eagles, Davao Occidental Slashers, Davao del Sur Cobras, Digos City Trekkers, Davao de Oro Miners, Davao del Norte Pioneers, Panabo City Banana Magnates, Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) Waves, Tagum City Premieres, and Davao City Durians.

The week-long DAVRAA Meet 2023 will take place from April 24 through April 28, 2023, and will include a number of sporting events, including dance sports, basketball, athletics, swimming, volleyball, and football, among others. The competition seeks to encourage healthy competition, athletic growth, and friendship among the young athletes in the region.

The Department of Education Region XI also aims to scout, cultivate and train budding potentials in sports to best represent Davao Region in Palarong Pambansa, and hopefully in Southeast Asian Games and Olympics in the future. PIO with reports from Van Jorain O. Rufin and Earl Austin C. Tan.
