The eagerly awaited Gov Cora Cup Road Games 2023, now in its third edition, officially commenced on May 18, 2023, at the Provincial Capitol Covered Court. Teams representing Davao Oriental’s 11 Local Government Units came together for the Opening Ceremony, all ready to play in a range of exciting sporting competitions, including Men’s Basketball, Women’s 3×3 Basketball (21 Under), Volleyball (Men’s and Women’s), and Beach Volleyball.

The much-anticipated Men’s Basketball match between the City of Mati and the Municipality of Cateel served as the highlight of the tourney’s opening observance. An influx of supporters and spectators filled the venue in anticipation of the matchup between these two local basketball powerhouses amidst the disapproving afternoon rain. The atmosphere was electric as the players took to the court, showcasing their skills and determination to emerge victorious in the opening game. In a hard-fought 87-83 match, Mati City overwhelmed Cateel to take the victory.

The Gov Cora Cup Road Games 2023 promises to be a fascinating sports journey as it goes to several towns in the province, allowing local audiences and supporters to see the action in their own communities. This unique approach aims to foster a sense of unity and pride among the residents of Davao Oriental, as they rally behind their respective teams and showcase their unwavering support.

The tournament games will continue through the end of June 2023, in time for the celebration of the 56th Araw ng Davao Oriental on July 1st.

This sporting extravaganza is an essential component of the province’s sports development program steered by Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon in coordination with the Provincial Sports Coordinator Engr. Maria Victoria Rodriguez and the Local Youth Development Office.

Governor Malanyaon has constantly advocated for the growth and promotion of sports in the province. She has put together a number of sporting activities under her direction with the goal of fostering talent at the grassroots level and empowering both emerging and seasoned athletes.

Governor Malanyaon, over time, has reiterated her firm conviction that a strong provincial sports program will not only produce exceptional athletes but also inspire the younger generation to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. By organizing events like the Gov Cora Cup Road Games, the Provincial Government provides a platform for local talents to showcase their skills and represent their communities with honor and pride.
