In time for the celebration of National Women’s Month, a successful OB-Gyne Surgical Mission was carried out last March 25, 2023, by the Brokenshire Medical Center Team at the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center (DOPMC) in partnership with the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental. The mission aimed to provide medical aid to women needing surgery for issues relating to their reproductive health.

The partnership between the Brokenshire Medical Center, the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, and the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center demonstrated the value of the organizations’ coming together to address critical issues in women’s health.

Governor Corazon T. Nunez-Malanyaon welcomed the surgical team, acknowledging that it was one of the first surgical missions in the province since the pandemic occurred. She emphasized the importance of providing medical assistance to women, especially during these challenging times, and called for continued efforts to address this urgent concern.

Dr. Reden V. Bersaldo, Provincial Health Officer II and concurrent Chief of Hospital of DOPMC expressed his gratitude to the Brokenshire Medical Center Team and the provincial government of Davao Oriental for making the surgical mission possible through a memorandum of agreement. Dr. Bersaldo praised the medical team’s efforts and acknowledged the importance of providing medical assistance to women.

Under the direction of Dr. Darleen Estuart, the surgical team performed various procedures, including exploratory laparotomy, diagnostic curettage, dilatation and curettage, TAHBSO, vaginal mass excision, myomectomy, and bilateral tubal ligation. Following the operations, fifteen patients expressed their deep gratitude to the team for the medical care they received.

The said OB-Gyne Medical Mission is anticipated to be carried out once every three months in the province for women of reproductive age with gynecologic issues requiring surgical intervention as the intended beneficiaries.

This collaboration resulted from the fact that DOPMC’s outpatient department has handled a significant number of women of reproductive age with gynecologic issues requiring surgical interventions.

The partnership was conceived as the Brokenshire Medical Center has a pool of qualified residents to perform operations and because they require surgical cases as a component of their medical education for their OB-Gyn residency training program.

The provincial government sees this accomplishment as a significant step towards better healthcare for women in the Province of Davao Oriental and a noteworthy feat in improving women’s access to medical services and treatment so they may live healthier lives and thrive more in society.
