Davao Oriental marked the beginning of the Provincial Nutrition Month Celebration yesterday, July 19, which highlights the province’s commitment to promoting a healthier community.

The celebration kicked off with the Farmers’ Trade Fair, led by Dr. Annabelle P. Yumang, the Regional Director of the Davao Center for Health Development. The trade fair showcased a variety of fresh produce and local products, encouraging attendees to support local farmers and make healthier dietary choices.

During the opening program, Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Bersaldo highlighted the importance of promoting nutritious food consumption which also support the local economy. He emphasized that a well-balanced diet is essential for good health and encouraged everyone to actively participate in promoting a culture of nutrition consciousness.

During the event, Dr. Yumang conveyed her appreciation and admiration for Davao Oriental’s outstanding commitment to implementing health programs. She praised the province for its efforts in improving the welfare of its residents and recognized the remarkable progress achieved through various health initiatives.

The centerpiece of the program was a nutrition forum, which delved into crucial topics related to livelihood and nutrition. Experts shared valuable insights into backyard vegetable gardening and urban container gardening, imparting knowledge that can empower individuals and families to produce their own nutritious food sustainably.

Moreover, the forum showcased innovative products such as iron-fortified rice, developed by the FNRI-DOST, as a potential solution to address micronutrient deficiencies. Partner agencies, including the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET), collaborated in delivering a livelihood seminar, highlighting the essential role of animal husbandry in achieving well-rounded nutrition.

Additionally, this year’s activities have been carefully thought-out to be aligned with this year’s theme, “Healthy Diet Gawing Affordable for All!,” promoting the importance of affordable, nutritious food choices for everyone.
