Barangay officials across Davao Oriental pledged their commitment to the upcoming Measles and Polio Vaccination Campaign during the MR-bOPV Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA) Orientation held on Monday, April 17.
Initiated by the Provincial Health Office and DOH-Davao Center for Health Development, the activity aimed at preparing punong barangay and their officials for their critical role in ensuring the success of the campaign.
Barangay Captains signified their support and dedication to the campaign, with Federated ABC President Rustan Castillones leading the pledge of commitment and signing the commitment wall. The provincial Administrator, Ms. Maria Gracia Tiago, RN, represented Governor Corazon T. Nunez-Malanyaon, expressed her gratitude to the officials for their commitment to the campaign.
The campaign, which is set to run from May 2-31, 2023, will involve vaccinating children aged 0 to 59 months against measles and giving them oral polio vaccine.
During the orientation, Dr. Reden V. Bersaldo highlighted the importance of the campaign in protecting the health and well-being of children in the province. The SIA is critical to the country’s efforts to eliminate measles and rubella by 2023 and eradicate polio by 2025.
Dr. Bersaldo acknowledged the importance of the support and cooperation of all stakeholders, particularly community leaders, in the success of the campaign. He expressed his appreciation to the officials for their participation in the orientation and for their commitment to the upcoming campaign.
Regional NIP Coordinator Ms. Glorideta Oclarit, RN, MAN, BSM, also provided essential information about the campaign’s details and the role of community leaders in its success.
In addition, the Provincial NIP Coordinator and Provincial Health Education and Promotions Officer, Ms. Darlene Sherille Fernandez, also spoke during the event, providing important insights and information about the campaign. During the open forum, Ms. Fernandez addressed some of the questions and concerns raised by the participants, further ensuring that they were fully equipped and informed to support the campaign’s success.
The orientation equipped community leaders with the necessary information and skills to support the campaign’s successful implementation. It is hoped that the efforts of the community leaders and health workers in Davao Oriental will ensure the health and wellbeing of children in the province and contribute to the country’s efforts to eliminate measles and rubella and eradicate polio.
