The provincial government of Davao Oriental has intensified efforts to enforce environmental laws and curb illegal mining activities, as well as the unlawful extraction of sand and gravel.
From January 15 to 17, 2025, the first-ever province-wide Deputation Training was conducted for personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to become deputized officers of the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO). These trained personnel will play a crucial role in apprehending illegal operators engaged in mining and sand and gravel extraction.
Held at the 701st Infantry Brigade in Sitio Magay, Don Martin, City of Mati, the training provided participants with valuable orientations and lectures on environmental laws and preservation protocols. Delegates from each Local Government Unit (LGU) in Davao Oriental, including police chiefs, military personnel, and law enforcement from 11 municipalities and cities, actively participated in the sessions.
Governor Niño Uy Expresses Support for the Initiative
In his message, Governor Niño Uy emphasized the vital role of the PNP and AFP not only in maintaining peace and order but also in protecting the environment.
“As Governor of this province, I am deeply grateful to our police officers and soldiers, as you play a critical role in safeguarding our peace and order, and in preserving our environment,” Governor Uy shared.
“Our laws are not only there to protect the environment but also to protect our people and future generations. I hope that we do not merely do our jobs because it is a mandate of our offices, but let us do it with passion, dedication, and love for our environment and our province,” he added.
A Call to Uphold Environmental Justice
According to ENRO Division Chief Retired Major General Leopoldo Imbang, Jr., the training is a collaborative effort between the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO), the Provincial Government, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XI, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), AFP, and PNP. This strategy aims to ensure that regulations and policies against illegal mining and extraction activities are effectively enforced by individuals with the capacity and authority to do so.
As Co-Chairperson of the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB), Governor Uy expressed his support for this strategy, calling it an essential step in ensuring the responsible use of natural resources in the province.
The deputization of personnel to assist ENRO reflects Davao Oriental’s genuine commitment to environmental protection and the prevention of illegal activities that pose a threat to both the environment and the communities.
