In an effort to protect and conserve the forest landscapes of the province while ensuring the livelihood security of the indigenous communities, the provincial government has partnered with international company Kennemer Group. Together, forming a consortium, they aim to provide greater opportunities to the Mandaya and Kagan tribes while safeguarding the biodiversity of Davao Oriental.
Earlier today, May 10, 2024, Governor Niño Uy representing the provincial government of Davao Oriental has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kennemer Group represented by its Chairman Mr. Simon A. Bakker.
Outlined within the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a comprehensive collaboration between the provincial government and Kennemer Group, focusing on the implementation of climate-smart agricultural practices. These initiatives encompass training programs in cacao farm management, abaca production, post-harvest processing, and extending vital supply chain support to local farmers.
Additionally, the agreement emphasizes concerted efforts toward forest conservation, including the establishment of a unified forest protection system in critical areas. This entails the training and deputation of forest guards, among other strategies, aimed at bolstering conservation endeavors. Furthermore, ambitious reforestation projects are slated for implementation.
Governor Uy underscored the essential role of local government units and the provincial government to realize the shared objective of forest preservation. “We must strike a balance between development and environmental protection while addressing the livelihood needs of our communities,” he emphasized.
Kennemer Group, renowned for its expertise in agriculture and climate solutions, is actively engaged in landscape development that integrates sustainable agricultural practices with forest and mangrove conservation and restoration, through collaborative partnerships.
Mr. Bakker, representing Kennemer Group, articulated the role of the company’s Foundation Bai-Ani, serving as a unifying force among stakeholders. “Our consortium is a testament to collaborative synergy. We aim to unite all stakeholders and align conservation efforts with carbon markets to access funding for our initiatives,” he said.
Identifying impoverished conditions as a primary driver of deforestation, Mr. Bakker stressed the importance of offering sustainable livelihood alternatives to communities. “By empowering rural and upland communities with sustainable livelihood options, such as agro-forestry systems like cacao and coffee cultivation, we aim to address the root causes of deforestation,” he explained.
This holistic program not only strives to halt deforestation in vulnerable areas but also fosters economic resilience within local communities, ensuring a harmonious balance between environmental conservation and sustainable development.
