The entire province of Davao Oriental is now under the State of Calamity. This critical declaration was unanimously approved during the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s regular session this afternoon, January 24, 2024. This critical announcement follows the endorsement of a resolution by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), chaired by Governor Niño Uy.

This declaration signifies a collective acknowledgment of the severe challenges confronting local communities in the province. The recent Shearline, which brought intense rainfall and flooding, has impacted 64,330 families, resulting in 2 fatalities and 4 injuries, as determined by the damages assessment and needs analysis.

Agricultural, livestock, and livelihood losses amount to P113.1 million, while damage to road networks and crucial infrastructure has impeded the government’s emergency response and disrupted essential services to communities.

With the declaration in place, the local government and relevant agencies are now authorized to swiftly and efficiently mobilize resources. This includes allocating funds, coordinating relief efforts, and implementing emergency measures to safeguard the well-being of residents.

In the upcoming days and weeks, various initiatives and strategies are expected to be rolled out to address the immediate needs of the affected population, rehabilitate infrastructure, and enhance Davao Oriental’s overall resilience against future calamities.

Because of this declaration, a price freeze would also take effect within the whole province to make sure prices of basic commodities are in-check and no one will take advantage of this trying situation.

The collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the community will play a pivotal role in ensuring a prompt and effective recovery.
