In the aftermath of the recent Shearline, which unleashed heavy rainfall and flooding, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has taken decisive action. A unanimous resolution, passed during a special meeting convened by Governor Nino Uy this morning, strongly recommends placing the entire province of Davao Oriental under the State of Calamity.

Pending approval by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in its regular session tomorrow, Wednesday, the recommendation arises from a comprehensive assessment of the extensive damages incurred in the province. The Rapid Disaster Assessment and Needs Assessment (RDANA) report, instrumental in shaping this resolution, reveals the profound impact on approximately 63,377 families across Davao Oriental.

Under the leadership of Governor Nino Uy, the council underscores the urgency of this declaration, aligning it with the RDANA findings that detail severe damages to properties and infrastructure.

Once ratified by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, this declaration will empower the provincial local government unit to swiftly access emergency funds and resources. Notably, the Quick Response Fund (QRF) will be tapped to supplement local funds for emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Moreover, the declaration will aid in enforcing price controls on essential items, ensuring affordability during the crisis. It will also expedite the implementation of rehabilitation and recovery plans, aiming to restore normalcy in the affected areas. Governor Uy expresses hope that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan will expeditiously endorse the declaration, emphasizing its critical importance for the welfare of the people whom local officials have sworn to serve.

Affected municipalities that already declared a State of Calamity as of today are the municipalities of Caraga, Tarragona, Cateel, Governor Generoso, and Lupon. Other Local Government Units are expected to follow suit after their respective RDANA reports. By PIO | Photos by JB Rain
