Seventy-three fishermen and van drivers, who are currently struggling to make ends meet due to the lack of work opportunities, happily received cash assistance from the provincial government on Monday, March 6, 2023.

“This is just a small amount, but I hope this can help you while you are still recovering,” said Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon, who met with the recipients during the distribution at the Provincial Capitol.

Governor Malanyaon sourced the financial assistance from her remaining Congressional funds, which were downloaded to the provincial government. She specifically allocated the funds for emergency assistance to help those who temporarily lost their livelihood.

The recipients consist of 57 fishermen who received P4,270 each, and 16 van drivers who received P6,405 each.

The recipients expressed their gratitude to Governor Malanyaon as the cash assistance has provided them much-needed relief as they are currently out of work.

“This was totally unexpected,” said Rogelio Ardiente, President of the van operators MANOSOB VATA. He said they initially came forward to ask the province’s assistance to help them resume the operation of their van terminal, which was temporarily shut down due to lacking permits. He said they did not expect that they would be given financial aid.

The recipients say the cash assistance can help them pay for their basic needs, especially food, in these challenging times.

“Sangko sa langit among kalipay. Tinuod jud ang giingon nga si ma’am inahan sa kanunayng panabang. Salamat kay Governor Malanyaon. (Our happiness is up to the heavens. It is true what they say that Governor Malanyaon is a mother of constant help),” he added.

Governor Malanyaon, during her brief talk with the van drivers and fishermen, reminded them of their responsibilities to comply with the necessary permits and follow local policies so that they can resume their livelihood. “The government would do its best to help you with your ordeal, but you also have your responsibility,” she said, noting their obligation to follow the rules and policies.

With opportunities abounding, especially in tourism, Governor Malanyaon urged them to take advantage of the province’s burgeoning tourism industry which needs the fishery and transport sectors to thrive.

However, she also reminded them not to exploit the tourists, citing the sudden increase in fares during big events, which could discourage tourists from visiting.

“Turismo ang tubag sa kawad-on. Ato gayud ampingan ang atong reputasyon nga diri sa probinya, maayo ang atong mga tao, dili naga pahimulos ug dili opportunista, Magtinabangay kita. (Tourism is the answer to poverty. We must take care of our province’s reputation. Let’s leave an impression that our people are good, not exploitative and not opportunist. Let’s work together,” said Governor Malanyaon. KLD-PIO | Photos by Mark Oliver Alvite
