Highlighting the province’s unwavering stance against insurgency, Governor Niño Uy emphasized the critical role of good governance in fostering enduring peace as he presided over the first-quarter meeting of the Peace and Order Council held in Mati City yesterday, March 25, 2024.

Governor Uy reiterated that good governance is crucial in upholding peace, stressing that the true measure of government efficiency lies in the satisfaction of its citizens. He underscored the imperative of sustained backing for people’s organizations and reintegration initiatives for former rebels and commended a noteworthy milestone since 2021 with 149 former insurgents seamlessly reintegrated into society, now actively contributing to peace-building endeavors.

Brigadier General Oliver Maquiling, Commander of the 701st Brigade, delivered reassuring news, reporting no activity from the Communist-Terrorist Group New People’s Army in Davao Oriental. This firm statement reinforced the province’s resilience against insurgency.

However, he cautioned against the attempts of left-leaning organizations (LLOs) to exploit local and national issues for recruitment, particularly targeting the youth sector. In the aftermath of recent flooding, attributed to the combined impacts of Shearline and Low-Pressure Areas, rehabilitation efforts faced hurdles, potentially serving as fertile ground for LLOs to stoke revolutionary fervor. The security sector also emphasized the urgent need to address the grievances of former rebels, their families, and vulnerable communities to stave off any destabilizing influences.

Despite enemy efforts, effective collaboration between the local government and law enforcement agencies has prevented any resurgence of insurgent activities in the province.

The military’s report received additional support from the police forces. According to Police Colonel Julius Silagan, the Provincial Director of the Davao Oriental Police Provincial Office (DOPPO), there have been no recorded atrocities committed by threat groups. He affirmed that Davao Oriental province continues to maintain a state of peace and stability.

Pol. Col. Silagan emphasized that the security forces are unwavering in their dedication to upholding peace. They diligently monitor threats and concentrate on leveraging their strengths to safeguard the ongoing progress of the province.

In a resolute display of solidarity, Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat spearheaded a resolution during the meeting, requesting the Department of Budget and Management the expansion of the Support to Barangay Development Program. The resolution advocated for a substantial funding boost from P2.5 million to P10 million for Barangay Badas in Mati City and Barangay Pichon in Caraga, underscoring the steadfast commitment to grassroots development and community empowerment.

With Davao Oriental declared insurgency-free in 2022, government entities, local leaders, and law enforcement agencies are committed to maintaining peace and prosperity for all. The province is steadfast in its journey toward progress, upholding principles of good governance and community resilience to safeguard against any threats to peace and order.
