LUPON, DAVAO ORIENTAL— Governor Nelson Dayanghirang has led the groundbreaking ceremony of a P 60 million-worth gymnasium poised as the “biggest” in Davao Oriental.

Funded under the province’s Local Government Development Fund, the said gymnasium will soon rise in the Municipality of Lupon.

With a dimension of 60 meters by 45 meters and covers a total base floor area of 2,700 square meters, the said infrastructure has a 3,000-seating capacity in sporting events and up to 4,000 occupancy on social events, said Provincial Engineer’s Office (PEO) OIC Engr. Ruel Dumadag.

The amenities in the gymnasium include a lobby, two office spaces, concrete bleachers, standard rubberized basketball court, two-team locker rooms, two shower facility, comfort rooms proportionate to the gymnasium’s capacity, commentator’s lounge, viewing balcony, parking spaces, and landscaping.

Dumadag also assured the structural integrity of the project, saying that it will serve as a command center as well as an evacuation center during disasters.

“This is by far the biggest gymnasium that we designed. That is why PEO Structural Engineer John Christopher Algallar advised the contractors to conduct a survey prior to starting the project to ensure the durability of the structure’s foundation,” Dumadag said.

Governor Nelson Dayanghirang, who led the ceremony, said that he is glad that the old, wooden gymnasium of Lupon will be replaced with a new and much bigger one.

“I am concerned with the safety of the people who use the old gymnasium that is why I have directed the PEO to fast track the implementation of this project,” Governor Dayanghirang said.

The project will start on the 28th of this month and will be completed on the same day next year.

Mayor Erlinda Lim, in her message of thanks, underscored the importance of the soon-to-rise gymnasium in boosting tourism in their town.

“Now that we will get a new gymnasium, we are expecting for our tourism industry to bloom because we can now host bigger events. This will be very beneficial to all of our constituents here because they can generate income out of accommodating the basic needs of the people who will attend events here,” said Mayor Lim.
