A major milestone in healthcare was achieved today as the province launched groundbreaking projects aimed at uplifting the lives of its residents, particularly children battling cancer and other patients in need. These initiatives represent a beacon of hope for families facing daunting health challenges and mark a significant step forward for the province’s healthcare sector.

A Beacon of Hope for Children with Cancer

Today saw the formal launch of the Pediatric Cancer Care Network Office at the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center (DOPMC), a collaborative effort with the House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc. This special facility serves as a transient home and support center for children with cancer and their families, providing critical care closer to home.

With the support of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), the center offers holistic services, including medical treatment, psychosocial support, education, financial aid, and rehabilitation programs. The House of Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization run by volunteers and supported by generous donors, ensures that these services are accessible to families in need.

“This facility provides a haven for families who previously had to travel far to access services, easing their burdens while navigating the challenges of cancer care,” said Dr. Mae Dolendo, a renowned pediatric oncologist and founding president of House of Hope, during the opening ceremony. She emphasized, “No child should die in the dawn of life,” echoing the shared vision to give every child a fighting chance.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed among the Provincial Government, SPMC, and the House of Hope Foundation to solidify this partnership and ensure sustainable care.

Groundbreaking Projects at DOPMC

In addition to the launch of the House of Hope facility, several critical projects were officially commenced to enhance the services at DOPMC:

  1. PHO Building Expansion and Ward Reroofing – Funded through the DOH Health Facilities Enhancement Program 2024, this project aims to modernize hospital infrastructure.
  2. Synchronization of Generators and Automatic Transfer Switch Activation – Supported by the Local Government Development Fund, this upgrade ensures uninterrupted power supply during emergencies.
  3. Potable Water System Construction/Improvement – Backed by the Local Government Development Fund 2023, this initiative strengthens the hospital’s water supply to meet growing demands.

These projects collectively enhance DOPMC’s capacity to deliver quality medical services, reflecting the provincial government’s commitment to health.

Leadership Rooted in Service

Governor Niño Uy, who led the ceremonies, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all partners and supporters. “These projects demonstrate our unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare services. They inspire us to work even harder in serving our people, especially those in urgent need,” he said.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reden Bersaldo revealed that more projects are in the pipeline, with funding reaching up to ₱55 million, thanks to continued support from the Department of Health (DOH).

Under Gov. Uy’s leadership, Davao Oriental continues to lead in health service advancements, ensuring every resident has access to top-notch care. The House of Hope facility and the improvements at DOPMC underscore the government’s genuine effort to address the needs of its people.

As Davao Oriental looks ahead, these developments stand as a testament to the collective vision of a healthier, more hopeful future for all.
