Governor Niño Uy personally received the award during the 24th Gawad KALASAG National and Regional Awarding Ceremony on December 9, held at SMX Convention, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City.
The province achieved this notable recognition under the Gawad Kalasag Seal and Special Awards for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Humanitarian Assistance 2024 in the Local DRRM Councils and Offices (LDRRMCOs) category.

A Step Beyond Compliance
In addition to ranking third nationally and leading the region alongside Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental earned the Beyond Compliant status with an impressive rating of 2.90. This rating exceeds the standards set by Republic Act No. 10121, also known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010. The distinction signifies the province’s effective and innovative strategies in disaster resilience.

Building Disaster Resilience at the Grassroots
Under the leadership of Governor Niño Uy, Davao Oriental continues to strengthen disaster resiliency efforts across barangays. The province has partnered with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through the SHIELD program, which aims to enhance the disaster preparedness capabilities of communities and stakeholders.

One notable initiative is the recently launched ALAB Program (Alalay Para sa Mas Luwas ug Andam na Barangay sa Probinsya). This groundbreaking program supports barangays in becoming more prepared and reliable during disasters, showcasing the province’s genuine commitment to public service and proactive leadership.
Additionally, the province has implemented ongoing training, funding for disaster infrastructure, and the acquisition of necessary equipment. These initiatives address the challenges posed by frequent natural disasters such as floods and typhoons.
