The province of Davao Oriental is preparing for the possible El Niño weather phenomenon and subsequent heavy rains and floods in the upcoming months as it takes precautions to minimize its potential impact on local communities.

Earlier today, June 21, members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) approved a comprehensive provincial mitigation plan to respond appropriately to the impending climate disturbance.

The approved plan has divided priority areas into clusters, each with its corresponding member agencies and offices. These clusters will address various concerns like food, health, logistics, and early recovery. The Provincial Agriculture Office has been designated as the primary agency responsible for implementing the action plan, with a focus on addressing the vulnerabilities of the agriculture sector.

The provincial mitigation action plan, developed in collaboration with various national government agencies and local stakeholders, outlines a strategic framework for managing and adapting to the disaster to prevent the loss of lives and properties, timely provide basic and immediate needs, and promote early recovery to the affected populace and sectors.

The provincial government is also preparing for the onset of the rainy season, as Davao Oriental is susceptible to flooding, landslides, and other hazards. As part of the preparation, the local government units have developed their own measures and plans for mitigation and preparedness.

The provincial government is dedicated to reducing the negative impacts of El Niño and the rainy season while also striving to improve its ability to adapt to changing climate conditions. The province aims to achieve long-term sustainability and disaster resilience through the successful implementation of this plan. PIO |Photos by Mark Alvite
