In celebration of Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month this October, the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, led by Governor Niño Uy, joined the IP Month festivities today in Banaybanay. The event, held in Mararag, Barangay Pintatagan, also marked the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act of 1997 (IPRA Law), Republic Act No. 8371, a landmark legislation that strengthens and acknowledges the rights of Indigenous communities throughout the Philippines.
During the celebration, Governor Uy commended Banaybanay’s IP communities for being outstanding examples to other communities across the province. Known for their dedication to preserving cultural heritage and protecting ancestral lands, Banaybanay’s Mandaya and Kagan tribes have set a strong example of cultural integrity and unity. Governor Uy, himself a proud member of the IP community from Davao Oriental, reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the welfare of IP communities in the province through continuous government programs, livelihood opportunities, and essential services that bring healthcare and other necessities closer to their communities.
A staunch advocate for cultural preservation, Governor Uy launched the first-ever Kabilin Festival, a celebration designed to highlight the rich cultural and natural heritage of Davao Oriental. A central feature of this festival, the Bal’law Bal’law event, serves as a forum for IP members, local government, and stakeholders to discuss challenges, protections, and conservation efforts for Davao Oriental’s cultural and natural legacies.
In celebration of IP Month, Governor Uy donated 10 solar street lights and distributed food packs to attendees, emphasizing the Provincial Government’s ongoing support for these resilient communities.
