The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental is boosting livelihoods and food security through its Provincial Livestock Dispersal Program. Led by the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office, the initiative has been distributing cattle, goats, and swine to small-scale farmers, aiming to strengthen the local economy by diversifying agricultural practices.

Since the program’s launch earlier this year, approximately 363 cattle, 1,375 goats, and 60 swine have been allocated to beneficiaries across the province. The distribution targets 330 farmers for cattle, 275 for goats, and five cooperators for swine. This effort forms part of a larger strategy to enhance food supply chains and promote economic resilience in the province.

The program’s success hinges on thorough evaluation and training. Each farmer undergoes a rigorous vetting process to assess their capability to manage livestock, and they are required to attend training sessions on proper livestock management. These sessions cover essential aspects like housing, forage, pasture management, and animal health.

A unique feature of the program is its community-oriented approach. Farmers must return the first offspring of their livestock to the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office, allowing other local farmers to benefit. This promotes a cycle of communal growth and sustainable development.

Governor Niño Uy emphasized the program’s broader impact, stating, “This initiative is about more than agriculture; it’s about building stronger communities and ensuring long-term food security.”

The Provincial Government, under Governor Uy’s leadership, remains committed to supporting the agricultural sector. Continued monitoring and support from the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office will help achieve the program’s economic resilience and sustainable development goals.

Through this initiative, Davao Oriental is fostering a robust agricultural community prepared to face future challenges while promoting sustainable growth. By PIO | Photos Courtesy of PVET
