Hundreds of farmers from 14 farmers’ cooperatives and associations (FCAs) in Davao Oriental joyfully received modern agricultural machinery and equipment worth ₱40 million. Funded through the 2023 and 2024 allocations under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Mechanization Program of the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech), the initiative aims to boost the province’s agricultural sector.

The turnover ceremony took place today, November 21, 2024, at the Provincial Capitol. Various equipment, including four-wheel tractors (T2), driven disc plows, levee makers, hand tractors, floating tillers, precision rice seeders, transplanters, harvesters, recirculating dryers, and rice mills, were officially presented. These machines, provided through the RCEF Mechanization Program, are designed to support farmers in enhancing their productivity and efficiency.

A Milestone for Farmers

Since the program’s inception in 2019, over ₱375.8 million worth of agricultural equipment has been distributed across the province, one of the largest rice producers in the region. This initiative focuses on strengthening rice production and helping farmers recover from disasters that have impacted the province.

Governor Niño Uy, in his message during the ceremony, emphasized the importance of sustaining government interventions. “The challenge lies in ensuring that all government-provided support is utilized and maintained effectively,” Gov. Uy said, urging farmers to maximize the potential of these resources to drive long-term progress.

Advancing Agriculture Through Modern Technology

The PHilMech RCEF Mechanization Program envisions reducing production costs and post-harvest losses through modern equipment and technology. This approach is expected to increase farmers’ incomes and make them more competitive in the market.

Dr. Rogelio Idago and Engr. Lorenzo Bermillo from the Department of Agriculture and PHilMech expressed their gratitude for the farmers’ warm reception of the program. They also pledged continued support for the beneficiaries, highlighting the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the longevity of the machinery.

Senator Cynthia Villar, a key proponent of farm mechanization legislation, sent her message of support, underscoring the program’s planned expansion over the next six years.

A Testament to Agricultural Commitment

The turnover ceremony underscored the strong dedication of both local and national governments to empowering farmers. This significant step aims to reinforce the resilience of the agricultural sector, ensuring it remains active and productive in Davao Oriental for years to come. PIO | Photos by JB Rain
