The Provincial Agricultural and Veterinary Offices of Davao Oriental have successfully rolled out the second batch of the “Manokan sa Gagmay’ng Kristohanong Mag-uuma” project, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing food sufficiency and providing alternative livelihoods for local farmer members of GKK in various parishes across the province.

The latest phase of the project took place at the Banaybanay Parish Center on July 17, 2024, benefitting 70 household farmers from the municipalities of Lupon, Banaybanay, San Isidro, Governor Generoso (Sigaboy and Luzon Parishes) and Maputi (Banaybanay), and Manikling (San Isidro) Quasi Parish. Each parish sent 10 GKK members to participate in the program.

The beneficiaries received a total of 350 heads of breeder chickens, specifically upgraded heritage chickens known for their resilience and productivity. Alongside the livestock, the Provincial Government provided veterinary medicines and free technical training to ensure the proper care and management of the chickens. The chickens were sourced from the provincial government’s production farm in Sitio Magay, City of Mati, ensuring high-quality stock for the farmers.

Additionally, the Provincial Agricultural Office distributed assorted vegetable seeds to the beneficiaries, promoting a diversified approach to food production. Governor Niño also contributed funds amounting to P15,000 per parish for the procurement of chicken feeds, further supporting the farmers in their new venture.

Board Member Stephen Paul “Popong” Uy, who represented Governor Uy during the turnover, said this project underscores the Davao Oriental Provincial Government’s commitment to uplift the agricultural sector and enhance the livelihood of its constituents. By integrating livestock and crop production, the initiative aims to foster a sustainable and self-sufficient farming community.

Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to improve their income and food security. The technical training provided by the provincial agencies equips them with the necessary skills to manage their new poultry ventures effectively, ensuring the long-term success of the project.

As the “Manokan sa Gagmay’ng Kristohanong Mag-uuma” project continues to roll out, more farmers across Davao Oriental are expected to benefit, creating a ripple effect of improved livelihoods and strengthened food systems throughout the province. By PIO | Photos by Carlo Catalan
