To ensure safer and disaster-ready communities, Governor Niño Uy spearheaded the launch of the innovative program ALAB (Alalay Para sa Mas Luwas ug Andam na Barangay ng Probinsya) on December 9. This initiative is designed to strengthen barangay capacities, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to better face calamities.
As Chairperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), Gov. Uy emphasized the importance of focusing on barangays, which are the first to experience the impacts of disasters. He remarked, “We must work together in planning and preparation. A strong barangay builds a strong province.”
The ALAB program consists of various disaster preparedness activities, such as:
- Training for Barangay Officials and Volunteers: Enhancing their understanding of and ability to respond to emergencies.
- Installation of Early Warning Systems: Enabling faster alerts for residents.
- Distribution of Survival Kits and Emergency Tools: Providing essential resources for disaster scenarios.
- Drills and Simulation Exercises: Training residents on proper actions during earthquakes, floods, and other disasters.
The province and stakeholders also signed a Pledge of Commitment, which signifies a collective dedication to Oriental Dabawenyos’s safety and resilience.
Gov. Uy views ALAB not just as a program but as a commitment to enhancing disaster management capabilities in the face of increasingly severe effects of climate change. “The safety of our people is the top priority. ALAB represents our proactive approach to disaster preparedness. Let’s prepare while there’s still time,” Gov. Uy added.
The success of ALAB relies heavily on the cooperation of all stakeholders. With this initiative, the province demonstrates its determination to build stronger and more resilient barangays, paving the way for a brighter and more prepared future for all. PIO | Photos by JB Rain
