The City of Mati in Davao Oriental successfully hosted the fourth-quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) and Tsunami Full-Scale Exercise on November 14, 2024. The event brought together 1,380 residents to strengthen disaster preparedness among local communities, particularly engaging stakeholders from government agencies, academia, and the private sector.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), in collaboration with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Davao Region, the local government of Mati, and various agencies, spearheaded the event. It was attended by regional and provincial officials led by Davao Oriental Governor Niño Uy.
EARTHQUAKE DRILL HIGHLIGHTS
Governor Uy, alongside regional and provincial officials, ceremonially initiated the event by pressing the alarm button to trigger the sirens that marked the start of the drill. Communities then practiced the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” procedure, emphasizing immediate safety actions during an earthquake.
The drill transitioned into an evacuation exercise where residents swiftly moved to designated safe zones, particularly those living in coastal areas. Assembly points, including areas around the Provincial Capitol, served as evacuation centers for participants.
Additionally, a firefighting drill was conducted to enhance the skills of emergency responders in addressing fire hazards that often accompany earthquakes. The simulation also featured rescue operations where responders practiced extracting victims from buildings at the Capitol compound. Medical and rescue teams demonstrated their readiness using ambulances, fire trucks, and other lifesaving equipment.
In his address, Governor Uy emphasized the critical importance of the activity.
“This drill is vital, especially since Davao Oriental is one of the earthquake-prone areas in our country. We must take these exercises seriously and always remain prepared,” he said.
The governor further highlighted the need to focus on preparedness for all types of disasters, including typhoons, floods, and fires.
“Readiness and knowledge on how to respond to emergencies are crucial in ensuring our safety,” he added.
A PILOT AREA FOR SAFETY INNOVATIONS
This year, Mati City served as the pilot area for the fourth-quarter drill in the Davao Region. The Provincial Government continues to work closely with stakeholders to enhance disaster response mechanisms and ensure the safety and security of all residents in Davao Oriental.
With initiatives like this, the province reinforces its commitment to building disaster-resilient communities, showcasing the importance of collaboration and proactive measures in safeguarding lives.
