The Provincial Capitol Covered Court was alive with excitement today, July 26, 2024, as it hosted the First Provincial Disaster Resilience Clinic, drawing a crowd. The event, which marked the culmination of National Disaster Resilience Month, saw a diverse gathering of children, parents, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officers from various municipalities, and representatives from numerous agencies.
The clinic was designed to showcase the province’s best practices in disaster preparedness and highlight its DRRM assets. It sought to educate the youth on disaster resilience, honor the contributions of response cluster member agencies, and underscore the various roles of unsung heroes in disaster response—those who may not wear capes but play a crucial part in keeping communities safe.
DILG Provincial Director Orle Cabaobao explained the rationale behind the clinic, emphasizing the importance of starting disaster resilience education at a young age, showcasing best practices, recognizing the efforts of response teams, and highlighting the different forms of heroism in disaster response.
The event featured a variety of demonstrations and exhibits, including:
- Asset and Resource Displays: Participants could view various assets and resources crucial for disaster response and recovery.
- Fun Activities for Kids: Children enjoyed zip lines and a rappelling tower, making the learning experience both fun and educational.
- Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP): Showcased resources for fire protection and prevention.
- Philippine National Police (PNP): Demonstrated their capabilities in search and rescue operations.
- Philippine Army: Displayed resources for disaster response.
- PVET Sagip-Hayop: Highlighted their evacuation program for animals during disasters.
- Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO): Discussed early recovery programs.
- Environmental and Natural Resources Office (ENRO): Presented climate change adaptation measures.
- Provincial EOD and Canine Unit: Showcased disaster response and preparedness assets.
- Department of Education (DepEd): Shared disaster preparedness measures, programs, and assets.
- Department of Science and Technology (DOST): Demonstrated early warning systems.
- Department of Trade and Industry (DTI): Highlighted best practices for business and service continuity during calamities.
- Provincial Tourism and SAWOM-Davao Oriental: Advocated for a “safe and beautiful Davao Oriental.”
The clinic’s highlight was the appearance of hero dog Appa, who completed a successful search and rescue mission in Masara village, Maco, Davao de Oro.
Governor Niño Uy’s administration, prioritizing disaster preparedness and response, was well-represented at the event. PDRRMO Assistant Department Head Francis Jason Bendulo expressed gratitude to the participating agencies, recognizing their vital contributions to the province’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
