Critically touted as one of the Provincial Government’s speedy and concrete answers to the pressing issue of power supply in the province, the first Davao Oriental 50-Megawatt Power Generation Plant, which had its official groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, October 9 at its expansive 40-hectare site in Brgy. Maputi, Banaybanay, is anticipated to commence operations in the first quarter of 2024 and is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape in the province.
In an interview during the groundbreaking ceremony, DY Green Energy Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer King Shing Donny Yeung, the Chinese investor behind this trailblazing endeavor, shared that land development for the massive solar power plant is slated to kick off in November 2023, with the project’s total cost estimated at PhP3 billion. He also promised that the project is set to introduce cutting-edge technology, including solar panels equipped with a battery system. This innovation will allow the plant to store excess energy, ensuring a stable and uninterrupted 24-hour energy supply, marking a first of its kind in Mindanao.
Yeung also expressed his deep appreciation towards the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, which has shown tremendous support in realizing this solar project. He highlighted the continuity of support, starting from the initial steps and discussions with the late Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon up to the current administration of Governor Niño Uy.
“The leadership, from the late Governor (Malanyaon) to now Governor Niño Uy, is very supportive of the project. They were instrumental in fast-tracking the project so that the people of Davao Oriental could enjoy sustainable, stable energy. There will be no more brownouts in Davao Oriental,” Mr. Yeung stated.
Acknowledging the persistent power supply problem in the province, with outages happening every now and then, Governor Niño Sotero L. Uy, Jr. also expressed his profound happiness on the realization of the first solar power generation plant in Davao Oriental, noting that this development will significantly propel further economic growth within the province.
“This project has really given a lot of confidence and hope to the people of Davao Oriental, as well as with the Provincial Government because we can now push for more development projects that will uplift the quality of life of our people. This is a very big development for our province, and we are very thankful that we have done it,” Governor Uy remarked.
With the commencement of the solar plant project in Brgy. Maputi, Banaybanay, the local government is optimistic about its positive economic impact, particularly in terms of generating job opportunities for its residents and increasing the local revenue.
This solar plant is poised to produce and supply up to 50 megawatts of power and provide a stable and cheaper power source to the growing province. The Provincial Government, gearing towards the direction of using clean, renewable energy, hopes to draw further potential tourism, agricultural, and industry-based investments with a more reliable, efficient, and reasonably-priced power supply, supporting and boosting the local economy.
