GOVERNOR’S PROFILE
In a province that has just lost a great and visionary leader, another remarkable leader emerged to continue the legacy and shape the destiny of the province’s communities, uplift the lives of the citizens, and guide them toward a brighter future. With unwavering dedication and a profound commitment to progress, Governor Niño Sotero L. Uy, Jr. stands as a beacon of hope, a catalyst for change, and a symbol of unity for the people of Davao Oriental.
Born on December 12, 1976, in Mati City, Davao Oriental, Governor Uy was destined for a life of dedicated service. From his early days, his passion for public service was evident.
Prior to becoming the local chief executive, he had an extensive political career that lasted for 28 years. Governor Uy’s trajectory in public service began as a youth leader, where his advocacy for education and programs for the youth marked the onset of his remarkable career. He started his political journey as a Sangguniang Kabataan Leader – SK Kagawad in 1992-1995, SK Chairman 1995-1996, and SK Municipal Federated President LGU Mati 1997-2001.
While actively taking a role in politics, he also eagerly pursued his education. As a young student at the Davao Oriental State University (then Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology), he delved into the world of communication and earned a degree in Bachelor of Science in Development Communication. He graduated in 2003, ready to embark on a journey of service and advocacy.
Governor Uy was elected as Municipal Councilor in the City of Mati in 2001-2010 and became ex-officio at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in 2007-2010 as Philippine Councilor’s League Federated President. Armed with a clear vision toward progress and prosperity, he was elected as a member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, serving as a Board Member from 2010-2016.
His passion for public service was even more evident when he was elected as Vice Governor of the province of Davao Oriental. Serving in a capacity as the province’s chief legislator from 2016 to June 29, 2023, his tenure witnessed groundbreaking achievements that reverberated far beyond the halls of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
Serving as a strong support to the chief executive, his leadership achieved remarkable milestones that have enriched the lives of Davao Oriental citizens. His efforts in supporting the province’s programs on education, social justice, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and disaster preparedness, among many others have left an indelible impact on the province’s development.
In an unexpected turn of events that would test the strength of the province’s leadership, Governor Uy assumed the role of the province’s local chief executive following the untimely passing of the incumbent Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon. With a deep sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to public service, Governor Uy stepped into the forefront of local governance, guided by his experience, principles, and determination to carry on the legacy of progress.
Guided by a belief in unity over division, Governor Uy transcended political parties and endeavored to mend divisions. His deep understanding of the current state of affairs, cultivated through years of dedicated service, enabled him to seamlessly assume the responsibilities of the office. His primary goals were on ensuring stability, promote unity, and ensure continued progress for the province during this challenging time.
With his family – Jennifer, his wife, and two children, Niña Louise Nicole and Jenn Nisluj – as his vital source of strength and foundation, Governor Uy navigates the transition with grace and strength.
Governor Uy recognizes the importance of upholding the vision set by his predecessor and is dedicated to promoting unity and cooperation. He aims to continue the policies and initiatives that have positively impacted the lives of the people in Oriental Dabawneyos. While honoring the legacy of former Governor Malanyaon, he has incorporated his own style of leadership, resilience, and innovation to guide the province towards an even brighter future.
